Wage: As per CUPE Local 4335 agreement ($15.93 – $23.58/hr depending on experience and qualifications/certifications).

The Public Works & Utilities Department provides an essential service for the Town of Wadena. This department manages our water & wastewater facilities, municipal infrastructure, vehicles and equipment. The testing and tracking, maintenance, servicing and repair of these are of the utmost importance to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our residents and visitors. This posting is for a position within the Public Works & Utilities Department. Preference will be given to anyone with the qualifications to fill the position at Certified PW I or II level which is at the higher end of the pay scale. However, the position is open for a regular Level I or II position within the department which starts on the lower end of the pay scale. Preference will be given within the uncertified Level I or II applicants, to those who are willing to obtain training and complete certification. 

 

DUTIES:

  1. Maintain, operate, service and repair all public works mechanical equipment. Equipment includes but is not limited to: sweepers, tractors, small engines, pumps and other tools and equipment as needed.
  2. Report to the Director of Public Works & Utilities.
  3. Work with the community in regards to the coordination and set up for all annual major / special events involving town Facilities.
  4. To comply with all bylaws, policies and procedures of the Town of Wadena.
    1. To maintain an updated record/log of all tools, equipment, and materials used in/by the Town and to ensure all machinery and equipment is kept in good working condition.
    2. To support the Parks & Recreation Department and Administration as may be required.
    3. To respond to all service requests in a timely fashion.
    4. Maintain, repair and service all doors, windows, lights, plumbing fixtures, signs, gates, fences and any other building fixtures incidental to the interior and exterior of any facility managed by the Town of Wadena.
    5. Provide building security by ensuring that all doors to buildings and rooms are locked when not in use and when leaving premises.
    6. Promote good public relations with other Town of Wadena staff members and the general public.
    7. When required, be responsible for daily water testing, checking and monitoring of the water and wastewater system, etc.
    8. Depending on qualifications and certifications of the applicant, the job description may be modified to allow for efficient use of personnel.

 

Qualifications:

  1. Minimum Grade 12 or equivalent education, a valid driver’s license (driver’s abstract will be required), a great work ethic and good public relations skills.
  2. Previous experience in water and wastewater treatment and distribution is an asset.
  3. Previous experience with operating, servicing and repairing machinery and equipment also an asset.
  4. Certified Level I, must have and maintain a valid Level I Certification in Water and Wastewater with the OCB. Certified Level II must have and maintain a valid Level II Certification in Water and Wastewater with the OCB.
  5. The following certifications are required, and must be willing to obtain: WHMIS, valid CPR and First Aid Certificate, Confined Space Entry.
  6. Demonstrated ability to follow approved policies and procedures.
  7. Valid driver’s license; Class 5A not required, but an asset. Driver’s abstract required.
  8. Must present a recent medical examination certificate.
  9. Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  10. Decision-making and critical thinking skills.
  11. Available to work flexible and varying hours of work, as well as some on-call hours, as may be required.
  12. Consent for disclosure of Criminal Record Information and Provincial Child Abuse Registry Access Application.
